Honestly, I have never been so repulsed by an update in my life.
I’d left both Twitter and Facebook because those two places are an actual nightmare for me.
For Tumblr to blatantly copy that sort of layout just feels bad. …Like ’gtfo for your own safety’ kind of bad. And I’m not being hyperbolic about it either.
I can’t stop thinking about Gwen in ATSV. She mentioned about how she, in every other universe, died when she was loved by spiderman/Peter Parker. Peter B., Noir, Ham, and Peni didn’t talk about it, but I can’t help but think about how Gwen is in this organization where literally thousands of people were in love with her and she died. When she walked through Neuva York, every Spiderman was tripping over themselves to call out to her specifically and receive a “hey :)” back. Not Spider Jess or Hobie.
And then there’s Pavitr and, love him of course, but I wonder how it felt to see him talk about Gayatri. I know it’s a joke but how does it feel to see yourself put on this pedestal. You can’t help but compare yourself and wonder “did my Peter see me that way? How would I have acted if he did?” To see her dad in Officer Singh. To see herself trapped in a bus, desperately pounding on the window as she dangled above certain death again.
In the original Spiderman India comic, they skipped over Gwen/Gayatri entirely, and instead had Meera Jain. Which I get why they did from a meta perspective, but in universe, how does it feel to know your replacement is out there. Every Spiderman is happy with their MJ, and they think of Gwen fondly, but like…. Gwen is replaceable. She is the first love, but she doesn’t get a future. It’s a canon event.
as 90% of desktop users have probably found out, today @staff released an update that for some insane reason COMPLETELY remodels the dashboard to replicate twitter’s. this is of course in the wake of numerous other thoroughly hated changes and a continued refusal to fix any of the site’s actual problems, half of which stem directly from site management.
HOWEVER, thanks to the power of jQuery, i was able to throw together a userscript that remodels the dashboard back to its original look almost perfectly.
here is my dashboard right now, with the script active:
ALT
and here is the old dashboard in separate tab container that hasn’t received the update:
ALT
it’s hardly perfect; i had trouble making it force reload to the fixed layout when switching between other pages and the dashboard, and it currently only fixes just the dashboard. it’s also completely untested on browsers other than firefox, and chances are it looks a bit screwy on ultrawide monitors. but for now at least, it’s a good fix.
the unfucker is a tampermonkey userscript. all you have to do to use it is install the tampermonkey extension, hit “create new script”, and replace the default code on the page with the script (link here) and save it.
If you, like me, had uBlock origin block the ‘Radar’ bit on the right hand side of your old tumblr, you can go to line 50 of the script which is currently the below:
this ‘new’ design is an actual nightmare in the visually overwhelming department. i have fairly bad astigmatism that my glasses can’t even correct properly and i have no literal idea of what i’m looking at
The discourse on twitter of the past couple of days has demonstrated just how little people (in the West, at least) know about how horrific the Imperial Japanese Army was. They know nothing of things like human experimentation at Unit 731, the Rape of Nanking in China, biological warfare against Chinese civilians, the Manila Massacre in the Philippines, the Sook Ching massacre in Singapore, torturing and even cannibalizing some Allied prisoners of war, the fact that the IJA’s atrocities started before WWII and that something like the Second Sino-Japanese War even happened, in general the killing of millions of Chinese civilians under their colonial operation (the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere), the kidnapping and sexual slavery of “comfort” women across the Pacific…Like there’s this weird rewriting of history on twitter like Japan was a victim in WWII, but while Japanese civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were, the Imperial Japanese Army was decidedly not! There’s a reason why Article 9 of Japan’s post-WWII constitution essentially bans them from declaring war and having any real military of their own (seriously, go read the text of the article, it’s wild). Their policy, endorsed by Hirohito, was literally the 3-all’s: “kill all, burn all, loot all.”
People can be against nuclear weapons and anti-Japanese racism without, you know, whitewashing an imperial empire that terrorized the Pacific and murdered millions.
Also the movie makes the point that nukes are bad. I have no idea what this discourse is about, it’s bizarre.
A Jewish man during a time of extermination so profound that the global Jewish population has still not recovered participates in creating a weapon to intended to help end the conflict that is eradicating his people, and he still comes to the conclusion that the work has been evil. Please use your brain everyone.
